Totally digging Taylor Sizemore’s bicycles at the moment. Raw, rad & functional machines. Go have a look at his website, check out the Sizemore journal every now and again and follow him on Twitter.

Wow. It’s been a while. Changes in Cape Town. Move to Jozi. New shop, new friends, new bikes, new logo. It’s been rather awesome!

Starling & Hero Bicycle Co-Op
April 21st, 2013 — Emile Kotze
As of Monday, 29 April we will be implementing the Starling & Hero Bicycle Co-Op (a small bicycle kitchen) in the place of the workshop at the Bicycle Café. We will have a work stand, bench and tools available for anybody to use at their convenience. The idea is to teach people about their bicycles, how to maintain them and also to provide them with a space and the necessary tools to do so.
We will not fix your bicycle for you, but we will definitely assist in the process. Rental of the stand and tools is “charged” at a rate of R20 per half hour (only a suggested donation) and yearly memberships will also be available soon which will include a few discounts and benefits. We will also still sell a few classic racers and Schwinn cruisers, as well as basic parts & accessories. Unfortunately, all custom bicycles and restoration projects will not be run from this space anymore (please contact for bespoke orders).
From early May we will also have after-hours bicycle maintenance workshops presented in collaboration with Woodstock Cycleworks. More details on the costs and program soon.
In the meanwhile, all queries can be directed to
Please note that the Starling & Hero Bicycle Café will be open as usual, with a bit more seating space inside. We’re still serving the most amazing omelets, custom sandwiches, fresh juices, smoothies and slow coffees (made with moka pots). Beer & boerie Fridays also still happening every Friday.
Update 29/04: The use of the stand and tools is open to anybody that would like to use it. There will be no charge, but we ask for a suggested donation of R20 per half hour. These funds will be used to maintain, replace or buy new equipment and tools.

The wheels keep turning
March 25th, 2013 — Emile Kotze
Over the next month or so, Starling & Hero will be evolving a bit. There will be some minor changes at the Bicycle Café in Woodstock, but please do not be distressed … the Café will still be serving up the usual awesomeness and all things bicycle will still be aplenty.
More details on the way.
